Okay, not strictly a hobby but we do have a hobby farm (in that we don't make money from it - far from it).
We have 5 heifers that we have owned for 3 years, no bulls. However, we do have a week old calf!!
He is gorgeous (as all babies are) and was named Ted (not by me). He was fine when he was born but now can't walk. I can get him to stand on his back legs but he refuses to stand on his front. He is drinking from his mum who goes to him a couple of times a day and sleeps with him. He had scours three days ago but seemed fine last night. However, this morning he is scouring again.
Perhaps he was injured when one of the other animals found him, I don't know. Has anyone come across this before and have any ideas as to how we handle it. I don't have much experience (none at all actually) with calves.
Since he is our only one and we are not a commercial enterprise I would rather not put him down without at least trying to fix him. (although he will end up in our freezer a couple of years down the track.
Have you called a vet out yet?
No, if we have to we'll take him in on Monday. Talked to our horse body worker and she'll come and have a look at him on the weekend.
He's still bright in the eye and seems happy in every other way.
Aww poor baby! *looks frantically for Eddie* If you see Kentucky around, he should know :)
