Sorry for the silly questions, but I got to know. I've never really been around or know anyone with a gaited horse. So my question is, are they born that way, or is that something that they have been trained to do? Is it only certain breeds that can be trained to do it, and how do they train them to do that?
they are born that way. :)
A gaited horse is born 100% completely natural. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There are ways to enhance their gait, but a gaited horse [TWH,SSH,RHA,KSA,MFT,etc] is born with a gait.
There are breeds that can be taught. Or at least A breed, which is the American Saddlebred. They are not truly considered a Gaited horse, such as a TWH or Rocky, or other breed mentioned.
The American Saddlebred is primarily a trotting horse, but due to their ancestry, have the ability to learn the "extra" gaits. The ones that are born completely natural gaited are few and far between, but they do happen.
Gaited horses are the smooothest ride. ride one, you'll probably fall in love.
I'm not sure about falling in love, but if I ever get the change I would like to ride a gaited horse, it would be different.
I don't know, but I don't think it would turn me from my drafts.
I'm guessing from the info I have that a gaited mule is coming from a true gaited horse?
Thanks for the info.
This cross does not always guarantee a gaited mule, but if one is born, it's worth a quite a bit of money -- especially if it is "lit up" in terms of color:-)
There are several different breeds of gaited horses with different levels of smoothness.. I have ridden several different ones and my favorite one is the Peruvian horse. I'm in a whole different world when I'm "floating" on one of these wonderful animals. You really must try one!
There are also gaited Peruvian Mules. I would love to own one someday.
