My boy got into the grain
Hello all, came home tonight and found that my 22yr old quarter horse had managed to get into the grain bucket today.
We estimate he managed to eat 6 quarts of Pollin "Safe Choice"
we got him to swallow about 1/3 gallon of mineral oil and are taking turns walking him around the paddock.
He seems fine at the moment, I have a call into his vet and will try and get him over here first thing tomorrow.
Any Advise on what to do in the meantime?
thanks in advance
So sorry to hear! This has never happened to me, but sounds like you're on the right track - I live waaay out in a remote area, so a long time ago I had my vet give me a few doses of Banamine for my horse first aid kit...the only additional advise I can think of is to maybe locate another horse owner that has a dose to lend, just in case? Good luck with your boy!!! Hope all goes well, and keep us posted :)
The horse seems no worse for the ware this AM , walked him a bit - he is eating hay and his abdomen is gurgling nicely, his stall is a mess ( 1/3 gallon of mineral oil will do that I guess)
fingers crossed he continues to show no ill effects…..
Poulin Carb Safe? It's mostly hay with minerals and vitamins added. Bright green, nearly neon bag? I use it here.
In this case lots of poop is good. Just give him hay for the day or if he is still grazing let him graze. Forget giving him grain for the day. Watch him but I think you are home safe.
