shetland or mini?

so this is a horse i work with, his owners claim he is a pure breed miniature but he is 10.2 hands high! is that possible? i know its not a very good photo of him, we were just running for a picture and he took a while to catch up... and I'm not sure if the photo will even upload, so if nothing comes up, i will post one tomorrow

It is VERY unlikely that he is a purebred miniature if he is 42 inches tall, that's closer to Shetland height. It could be that he is a cross. He is also rather coarse (thick boned/larger head) for a mini. If he was 37-39 inches I might say he's just a grade 'backyard breeder' mini, but he is quite a bit over the height limit for a registered mini.

thank you endiku,

i was talking to the local trainer and she said it was likely his grandparents were either part or pure shetland. now, knowing nothing about genetics, do you think that makes sense? or would one of his parents have to be shetland? maybe a great grand parent? how far back do your think the shetland would be.
