Estimate Full Height???
I have a 14 month old paint QH and a 14 month old Tennessee Walker. I there any way to get a good idea of how tall these horses will be a full grown. Sorry if this is a silly question.
Not silly at all.. You should be able to do a string test. There are 2 that I know of and I'd do both to see if they come out the same. One is to use a soft tape measure or a piece of rope/string and measure from the point of the elbow down to the fetlock(rear nobby part). Then double that. The other way is to measure from the middle of the knee(joint dip) straight/taut not along the leg) to the top of the C band. If that measurement is say 15 1/4" your horse should reach 15.1 hands. If it is 16 1/2" then he'd be 16.2H.. So inches become hands and the quarter inches are the .1, .2, .3 (inch)measurements. Make sense?
Thank you very much. Where on the fetlock to I measure to? Top, bottom? Also is this method very accurate?
I've heard that method is fairly accurate. I know one of our girls was born with long cannons (from the knee to the coronet band) she is huge for her breed will finish over 16 hands I think.
I've always gone by the cannons, Never heard of the elbow to knee measuring
