dull, dry coat
in the winter my horse has a sleek shiny dark coat. in the summer it gets bleached (dont mind that its natural) but it gets really dull and REALLY dry. im sure a lot of it is the sweat but is there anything i can do to help get it more moisturised? obviously a moisturiser lol but any recommendations? or something else that could help? i already give him cornoil on top of his electrolytes (he gets stress dex and black as night - black as night does not really help b/c i cant get down to the barn and give it to him every day) and suggestions would be great! thanks in advance! =]
After a bath, give him a baby oil bath. Put some baby oil (just a squirt) in a bucket of water and sponge it on him. Then just sweat scrape him and let him dry. It works very well...just make sure not too use too much or it will make him greasy and then everything will stick to him (also it wouldn't be good for him to be in the sun with a lot of baby oil on him...so just watch how much you use). Good luck!
One thing I have found useful is a slick-n-easy stone. It gets down and deep in the hair and pulls out the dirt. My horses are shiny and slick lookin. I also use apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle in their mane and tail for dandruff. Dandruff will come when the horse has dry skin, look in his mane. Listerine also works. I feed my personal horse a cup of flax seed every day and have for 4 yrs. He always looks shiny and his hoofs are strong and solid.
I like healthy hair, I just spray it on after I ride. Makes nice soft, shiny fur!
Omega oil works too, but healthy hair is cheaper
thx guys ill have to try that =]
Mineral oil works too.
I love the slick n' easy blocks. Besides lots of good grooming to make his coat shiny, I use a moisturizer that you mix with water and spray is all over my mare. I think it's just called Hair Mositurizer. You can find it online and in tack shops. It works very well to bring out the shine. As far as supplements go, I have heard good things about Sho-Glo, which is supposed to be for the coat. I just started using the Sho-Flex because I want to protect her joints and the Sho-Flex has Sho-Glo in it as well.
Eqyss makes great all natural products that don't have silicone or any of that other added stuff that dries out your horses like some products! The Avacado Mist works really well and smells really good! it gets down to the pores and hair folicles and really makes a difference! I use it just about every day and you can use it on your won hair..double bonus :) Coconut oil is also a great way to condition the hair and is all natural..you can use it in a spray bottle and once it silidifies you can just spray it on coat/manes/tails/feet etc. :)
i am definitely gunna try some of this! great ideas =]
by the way...w/ the slick and easy blocks you just run it over there coats right? and doesnt it act as a curry comb? i use them for removing bot eggs but thats about it lol!
Try adding some vegetable oil to his feed (EVOO works well). ~2oz at each feeding makes a difference.
