So the AQHA World has come and gone..
I got the super fun experience of working with the official photographer, KC Montgomery. I scribed for him and his other photographer during classes. I got to watch a lot of events I other wise wouldn't have watched. The following is my opinion and meant to be taken in a light funny manner. Hahah.
I really enjoyed the sorting and the team penning, wish Western Pleasure people would yell and get that worked up in the pen. "YEAH! YEAH YOU SPARKLE!! SLOW DOWN!! DONT PUT YOUR HEAD UP DONT DO IT DONT DO IT AAAAAYE!!!" Haha just being silly.
A big gorgeous hunter-type dapple grey stud won the Superhorse last night, his name is Unforgetable ;-) $50,000 O.O
The Junior cow horses were phenomenal. I found a trainer to hopefully send my Dusty to in the spring, I hope he can be that good one day.
Pole bending....I can't say much since I don't compete at that level, but I was expecting something a little..I dunno..more. Barrels was good, I was really wanting to watch the stake's but I had to leave. I was surprised by how many of the barrel racers were males.
Jumping horses were fantastic! I loved the hunters as well.
The performance halter, still not sure what the point of that class was (just saying)...I did find one horse in that class drool worthy, Im A Tuff Bueno. A little long in back but very bull dog type. He placed very well in all the roping classes.
Amateur boxing, a few cows decides they wanted to push the boundaries and just go full working cow horse. Carol Rose talked to me (aka asked my how many were in the class) and I almost died. Just a little stars truck. Almost like when I worked the NRHA derby show office and Lyle Lovett smiled at me, and Shawn Flarida made eye contact...
Lots of gorgeous shirts for sale in the trade show, I named a few Rihanna, Lady Gaga and my person favorite Ke$ha. You spend $4000 on a shirt, what happens when you fall off?! I guess you can get insurance on them. And $20,000 saddles. *drools*
Halter horses are so great as standing still, you ask them to move and they just start bucking
In the last class last night in Western riding, reserve and champion were both roans. One was a red dun roan, which I had never seen before (Dun it on the range was his name I believe).
Can somebody please tell the guys in western pleasure not to wear black shirt and chaps?! BECAUSE EVERY SINGLE GUY DID AND I COULDN'T TELL THEM APART AND IT MADE MY JOB VERY HARD
There was a pretty crop-out splash in the pleasure driving class. Looked slightly out of place but MAN could he move.
I didn't get the "big horse show people" vibe from most people. Yeah, some people were pretty snotty acting and I avoided those people, but most of them were just down to earth horse people that were here for a purpose.
Ropes were baby blue shirts way to freaking often.
All halter horses are sorrel.
All hunters are bay.
Palominos are great at working cow horse.
All team penners have coon tails.
Pole benders like to scream at the poles really loud to scare them away.
In all seriousness though, my favorite part was being in every awards ceremony. There is two people left in the arena, and when one is called for reserve the tears of happiness on the champions face made all their trials through the year worth it. Some had bawling family and friends in the crowd. It was fantastic and I teared up multiple times..
That's my dream..
What a fun experience for you!
MangoRoX87, you made me feel like I was there... Nice job... Have you thought about writing professionally? ;-D
If you don't mind me asking, how do you get in with KC Montgomery? I have worked assistant photographer with several local people, would love to know how you go about approaching the "big leagues" :)
I was there helping a friend with an aged mare in amateur halter, she got 10th! The shopping was 10x better than APHA world was. I liked the AQHA vibe. Still too competitive for my blood, so I'm sticking with APHA ;)
I'm actually not really big into photography (I've got a nice DSLR, I like it as a fun hobby and take pics for friends when needed), and I learned quite a bit while sitting with him, like getting the super nice reining pics and hunter jumps and ISO and etiquette and such. They contacted my college and asked if their was anyone on the equestrian team that wanted to make a few bucks and was available. So I guess, they approached us!!:P I would definitely look into
personally messaging him. He's a really down to earth guy and is very proud of his work. You might ask if you could scribe for him and a show or go with him on one of his farm shoots. :)
Sorry for the double post:P
Boots, it was a blast. I've worked the arena gate at OK paint horse shows, and have run judges sheets and worked the show Office at the NRHA Derby and had a summer internship which the NRHA in the membership department. I've been blessed with lots of fun, work experiences. I could almost put on a show by myself!! Haha
Wd...one time I tried to write a book...each chapter was like 2 pages hahahah
Sounds like you had an awesome experience! You certainly made me a little jealous ;D
Very funny and I think a lot of your observations are spot on!
Agree with GoAppendix - What you describe is everything I see in the AQHA member magazines!! haha I live in a wilderness setting, and am not part of the show circuit, by any means. Just for fun, however, I might mention that in my QH's latter years, her previous owner had shown her in halter, and believe it or not, just as you predict.... Star is a sorrel! :)
I was secretly cheering for every palomino or buckskin that went into the halter ring...go under dog!
I'm not gonna lie though, I could tell which judges were completely ignoring structure and looking at substance. I was sickened by how many of the halter horses that were huge and very over at the knees, placed above smaller horses with correct legs. The horse that won 3rd in performance halter stallions, I have no idea how he qualified for that class. He was WAY to big to be a riding horse and his hind legs were so posty. Just sayin...
