Best Type of Grass to Plant?
I wasn't sure where this could go, so if this isn't the right place, feel free to move it Mods. :)
I am going to be moving my horses from a stable to my house. We are tired of boarding there and getting taken advantage of(really long story) so we have cleared a field for the horses to come to our house. Some landscaping people are coming to do the final grade and we've put in drainage pipes and all that good stuff. My question is, what kind of grass is the best to plant for horses as far as nutrition is concerned? Also, would I need to also feed them pellets or hay like they are getting now at the stable? We will have two paddocks with grass so we can rotate the fields. I just want to give them the best grass to graze on and am not experienced with that at all. Where they have been kept for the past 10 years doesn't have grass in the paddocks, so they are being fed twice daily pellets and grass hay. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
the grass depends on your climate and nutritional needs. Go to your local co-op store and ask. they will tell you want grows best, what it can withstand, and the nutritional value to your horse. After its planted and it grows, your hay/grain content should depend on how much they are worked, and how much they are out.
Ok, thanks a lot for your reply! We had some landscapers come in and they actually researched it and called the seed companies and they were able to get good advice from them. We put down a mix of Kentucky Bluegrass, Orchardgrass, clover and something else. It'll be so nice once it grows in! Yay! :D
You have definitly done right, nice to have knowledgable landscapers. I have 3 areas I keep our girls, one with cool season grass one with warm season grass and a dry lot. The trick is not to let any one area get overgrazed. I take them off of pasture completely during the winter to the dry lot with hay and shelter. I feed a supplement with an all around horse chow during the winter along with brome hay.
