Broken Coffin :(
Im pretty sure our ridgling, La Sourcer Ru, broke his coffin the other night in a race. Coming around the last turn my cousin who drives him said it felt like something just "let loose" and he broke stride and almost went down. Luckily he didnt, but after the race he wouldnt put his foot down at all, and also had a slice on his quarter where he hit it from when he broke stride. I got him half way back to the barn (on 3 legs) when he couldnt go anymore, so my cousin got the vet for me, and he gave him some pain killers to get back to the barn. We dont know for sure yet that its broken, but I'm 99% sure. Tomorrow the vet comes to do xrays. I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. We would have had xrays done that night but there was no vet around (which there is supposed to be!) aside from the state vet, but he only pulls blood from the horses for testing after the races, so he doesnt have any equip. there to do anything. I hate when these things happen....
Hoping for the best for both of you!
Oh I am so sorry! This is so scary and sad. I thought there is supposed to always be a vet on the track! I know in CA. they Always have the parmedics for both horses and people.
I will send out so good thoughts...
Hang in there and keep us posted on the findings...
Depending on what they find...I hope it is something that can be fixed and then the battle during that time is Laminitis...
Sending a cyber Hug.
Oh thats so sad im so sorry...good luck
ok good news and bad:
GOOD- hes standing on it now, can walk, but still is favoring it. the xrays didnt show a broken coffin:D
BAD- had xrays. showed a crack (i wasnt there for the xrays n didnt get a chance to see them yet) but the vet said there is no way to tell how old the crack is. and it has not run into the coffin (atleast yet).
we are taking the xrays to our vet who does most of the work on our horses. hes an excellent vet and hopefully he can make light of the situation and help us. this vet that took the xrays is just not good for lameness and such. she mostly just deals with cows foaling and she deals with our broodmares foalings...but thats the extent.
Good luck, I hope everything ends well in the end!
