What Colour Is He Do You Think?

1 Attachment(s)
I've noticed that there are a lot of people on this forum who are so knowledgeable about colour, which sadly I am not....yet.

I was wondering what colour Jake is. He's got white hairs evenly throughout his coat which says roan to me but all the examples of red roan that I have found just don't look like him. And the sorrels I've seen are all solid (without the white hairs). He's also got lovely dappling...so I'm totally confused. Thoughts anyone?

Roan Sabino?? I think that's how you'd say it. That's my guess.

He's an awesome looking horse. I bet he is a sabino.

He is just stunning!!! Is he a Belgian cross by chance? Along with the sabino coloring, it looks like he may have the Pangare modifier that lightens his lower body and his muzzle. Dapples are usually caused by nutritional factors. It is usually fat or very healthy horses who display dapples. :D

Pangare: Pangare is a modifier that acts by lightening certain portions of a horse's coat, usually the muzzle, the belly, the inner forearms and thighs, and sometimes even the chest or around the eyes. When it acts on a chestnut coat, the horse usually will have a flaxen mane and tail. It can act on any color, and varies in intensity. It is often found in pony and draft breeds, such as Haflingers, Fjords, Exmoors, and Belgians.

You can find all kinds of good sites if you google horse color genetics.
Here is a site that I really like, it has tons of colors and patterns that I had never heard of before.
Equine Color Genetics

Thanks everyone...that was so helpful.

And thanks smrobs for the link to that site. I had googled horse colour but since I didn't put in genetics that site did not come up. Very educational and I discovered another colour pattern he has...a Bend Or spot on his stifle, on the opposite side of the pic I posted. What a colour combo he is! And yes, he is a Belgian cross but I have no clue what he is crossed with...LOL.

Thank you for the compliments on my big boy!

How tall is he? If he is slightly shorter than the average Belgain, then (to me) it seems likely that he was probably crossed with a paint or pinto that was average horse size like a QH.

Jake's a pretty big boy, 17hh. But I've always thought he had paint or a pinto coloured parent in him somewhere.

In the past I've had 3 other horses, all blood red bays, the only white being on their rear fetlocks. So having a red roan sabino with Bend Or spots (realized he has more than just 1) and a b&w pinto are quite the departure for me! LOL

i would call him a strawberry roan. that's just what he looks like so me. Beautiul horse by that way!

I'm not sure, but you will get great advice on here. But he looks like a lovly horse!
