Hives following strangles.....any connection?
My horse has had strangles for several weeks now and is definitely on the mend. His node that burst open is almost closed and he is his perky self again. This weekend he broke out in hives for a couple of days and now they are all gone but two small whelps. I don't quite know what to make of this....I introduced a new Senior feed to him just before the hives appeared, but I introduced it gradually with the feed he'd been on. I immediately stopped the new feed and the hives are almost gone. Think I will go a few days with no feed at all and then try a little of the new feed on him. Hopefully he'll handle it with noe reaction. Any suggestions anyone? Has anyone else had a hives reaction after strangles ? Thanks so much!!!
I've been around strangles a lot by being at stock yards and working with yearlings that came from stock sales, I've never seen any that broke out in hives during or afterwards. Maybe something he is allergic to in his new feed? you mentioned you stopped giving it to him and the hives went away I'd almost guess that was your culprit.
Hives is an allergic reaction. If you can zero in on what is causing them you're ahead of the game. Does your new feed have molasses in it and have you fed molasses before in that amount? Many horses are allergic to molasses and folks just don't know it. Just a thought.
