My Yearling Is Nursing!!!
I just put my yearling back in with her dam this morning and caught her nursing on her dam! The mare doesn't even mind! What do I do...they have been seperated since weaning...Is there something I can put on her teats to get the yearling to stop or ??? I really need the extra space where the yearling was. The dam and baby are not ever being sold.

I would remove the yearling asap, exspecially if she is in foal or soon to be foaled.

I don't think it is a big deal - our 3 yr old filly went back into the field with her mom after 6 weeks - she nursed a couple times and then stopped - they are sometimes in the field together and sometimes not. There is no separation anxiety or problems.
My 2 yr old colt also had the same situation - then when he started getting too frisky I separated him from mom - but when mom was pregnant I put them back together. No issues - my colt even nursed off other mares after weaning. He is fine whether by himself or with my gelding.

The mother will eventually teach the baby not too..my mule tried a couple times and then the mom put a stop to it.
