Natural Horsemanship

Hi guys,
I'm new here!!!
Just wonder what your thoughts are on natural horsemanship.
I have been doing this with my mare for around 8 months and have found she has settled down so much and i really feel the connection between us is growing stronger and stronger everyday!!

Anyone else had any experience with it?

Yeah i have competed in it. The Horsemanship Trials, we call it in WA. I personally think it works wonders!!

HI! Competed in natual horsemanship!!
Wow i wold love to see some of that!!
What exactly did you have to do, or what does it envolve? What sort of excersizes?

sweetypie16 09-10-2007 11:17 PM

Well basically you have to train your horse to walk with its head in front, with your shoulder inline with the horses shoulder. I only went in a beginner class, all we did was get the horse to trot by you side. When you halted they halted, with you sidepassed, they side passed ect. Pretty amazing stuff!! It was all on the ground though, no riding.

I do lot of Natural Horsemanship with my horse and it's worked wonders! He's much more confident and less spooky and we're more of a partnership now.

When I first got him he would back away when you came near and he was always tense but now he's much more relaxed and follows me around the field, and when he's loose in the school we jump!

Yeh its great!! Correct me if i am wrong, isn't parelli a form of Horsemanship? Isn't it just that Pat Paelli just named it after himself? I don't really follow him....?

Miss Dent 09-11-2007 04:14 PM

yeah sweetiepie16- its all the same, all under the 'natural' banner, they just have a few different methods and wording they like to use.
I take a little bit from each of the methods to find what suits me and my horse best and the one that gives us the clearest communication.

~MavvyMyBeauty- Sounds like it really works for you and your horse also!! I love it!! Really opens up the communication and understanding of 'why' you horse does something. I like to think i can understand my horse a little more now....
