Building Cross Country Jumps
Yey! My BO likes the idea of putting a few cross country obstacles around the hay fields. We only have space for a few, and the typical log from large fallen tree is already there. I'm thinking a coop would be a good one and could use suggestions for a 3rd or 4th. Also, since I have no clue how to build them, does anyone know of any websites showing how to build safe solid fences? Just small stuff. BN size at best.
I have an idea for a jump, but sorry, I don't know how to build it. You could use a regular arena jump, and then dig a little ditch under it.
^Yea a ditch is a good jump if you can do that. Maybe barrels, or tire jumps. There is a book lurking out there somewhere that I know of....
Well, if this hay field doesn't belong to MyBoyPuck - a ditch is absolutely a bad idea unless permission is given.
I will tell you, properly made CC fences are not easy to make and take a skilled person who has experience in construction to help you out. Lots of cutting, sawing, drilling. I know, I've built fences and they take hours and knowledge.
Tire jumps are interesting and fun to jump, but difficult to make. You need to dig a somewhat ditch in the length you want the jump to be *one end to the other* so that the tires will beable to fit into it enough to remain supported and solid.
Then you want a long pole, to match the length of the ditch, or a tree stump small enough to work...whichever you want..... and then start placing the tires into the groove you dug, making sure the pole goes inside.
Then you want to hammer 2 posts, one on each side of the tire jump, and tie the pole that you strung through the middle of the tires with a strong and sturdy rope, with a proper CC knot. Then you want to take 2 more poles or trunks of a tree, and place them on each side of the tires to support the tires - sorta like you would with ground poles on each side of the stadium fence.
Eventually you get this:
I have many pictures of CC fences from the barn I used to Work and Train at - but they aren't simple to make. If you want to see more, let me know and I'd be happy to help you out.
this is a good book on building cc jumps
Ooops, I did not mean to post the same picture twice.
I love tire jumps.
There are lots of books available about building jumps.
Heres the two I have.
A Basic Guide to Building Cross-Country Fences-Philip Herbert
Making Your Own Jumps-Mary Gordon Watson.
I wish I was more helpful, but I'm hopeless with tools ^^'.
Thanks for the book ideas. While the tire ones do look interesting, I don't want to put anything ugly on the property. I'm looking more for natural type stuff. I'll hit the book store and see what I can build. I don't really have a need for a ditch. Puck has no issues whatsoever with ditches or banks from all his trail riding. It's almost like he likes the obstacles to have a bit of a challeng to them. He gets all proud of himself when he navigates a bank. The boy's got talent. I just need to catch up with him!
Those books are what I was talking about! :D
which ones lol
