An old injury, maybe. Will it affect her now?
My little trail mare is getting more work than she used to as of late (a horseless-friend of mine decided to 'adopt' her for showing purposes, and is also sort of retraining her to respond to leg pressure and such. Ruby always used to be just for little kids to ride and the occasional trail ride.), and so I'm worrying more and more about the condition of her joints and muscles.
She has one back leg where the bone looks like it is bowed or has a build up of scar tissue (I can't really decide which), and I'm not sure if it's the result of an old break or injury or what.

She's not limping or favoring the leg at all -- never has -- and isn't tender or anything. It doesn't seem to inhibit her in the least, and so I never worried much about it before, but now that she's doing more than walking circles with a kid on her back, or the occasional short trot, I'm worried that putting too much stress on her leg will injure her.
I'm planning to ask the vet about it next time he's out, but I don't really see a reason to make a special appointment for it.
What do you think?

If she is not favoring the leg at all, I wouldn't worry about it. It could be from an old injury (kick or fall where she hit it on something) or it could be just a weird bump that developed as her bones grew. If it had been a fracture in the middle of a long bone like that, she would have probably been put down when it happened so the chance of it being an old break is virtually nonexistent. However, on the very slim chance that it was a break and she actually healed up and stayed sound, breaks heal stronger than the bone around them because of the build up of calcified scar tissue on the bone. Let me put it this way... she has a better chance of snapping a front leg than re-breaking a bone that has healed. My old gelding Buck broke a bone in his front pastern and after about 3 months of stall rest and a year of pasture turnout, he was good as new. He was never really used for anything except a kid horse after that though. My dad was too paranoid about hurting him again, plus, by that time, I had claimed him as my own. :D

It is most likely an old splint. A couple of my barrel horses came to me with them and they were never an issue.

Thanks, that really puts me at ease. XD I worry over her a lot lately, so that's one less thing to think about.

The worst injury we've ever had was a cut, so I don't know a lot about the after-effects of breaks and such.

;D Buck was my only equine experience but I have had plenty of my own broken bones.
