Who knew? Your sugar free stuff can KILL your dog.

I had no clue….that is until today, when one of my little guys got ahold od dads Nicorette Gum. The nicotine is bad enough, but the sweetener-XYLITOL is the real killer. And it is in all sorts of artificially sweetened stuff! I had no clue. In the meantime both my boys are in the hospital at about $500/day and we are hoping for the best. We cannot say for sure that the one who is as symptomatic got none, so we are being cautious. But-this is my PSA of the day. I did not know gum could poison my dog.

If it says 'sugar free' you should read it as 'filled with a s*** load of other crap'

But Xylitol is found in gum, also in toothpaste (which is why you're not supposed to use human toothpaste on dogs either). It's an artificial sweetener.

It's really not all that great for us either.

xylitol is good for us... just not dogs.

One is home from the hospital and we are hoping the other can come home today. Waiting to see what the liver function tests show today. I didn't say ALL sweeteners were bad-I was focusing on the Xylitol.

Yep, xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs!!! I hope yours are getting better! :) However, it is NOT bad for humans, the opposite actually. Xylitol is extremely good for oral health, and does not damage the body in any way (unlike sugar) other than giving you a bloated stomach if you are not used to it and had a lot :P. Also, it is not artificial in any way, it was first made out of spruce during the war, and is now made out of different plants. It also occurs naturally in the body :)
