New Tack! Seems to fit well but looks off?
FINALLY got tack of my own. Had my mare for 9 months... figured it was time. Here it is!
This is a Stubben Siegfried, 17.5" 30cm. Heard great things about this saddle and found one local for a great deal. A couple of buddies and my instructor has been helping me out with fit. It seems to fit us both well- even sweat spot on her, 3 fingers fit over the withers, sits in place and doesn't rock around even without the girth or pad, etc.
However, looking at my horse tacked up, the pommel is quite higher than the cantle. Another instructor of mine suggested that I scoot the saddle back and off of my horse's shoulders more (I completely agree with her, it looks too far forward) and also suggested that I get a hunter pad instead of this dressage/all-purpose pad and to also look into a riser pad.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of tack is very limited! I have a lesson tomorrow so I'll bring these things up, but would love input or advice from people here as well! :D
it does look way too far forward, and possibly too narrow. could you post some photos of her with saddle on, no pad, from various angles. on level ground, and with cinch done up .
I'll try to get those photos tomorrow! Thanks
I agree, it looks way too far forwards; it is also unbalanced. The center of balance should be centered on the saddle, which will allow you to sit properly in the seat. It is too high through the pommel, causing the balance point to be shifted way far back, which will cause you to sit too far back as well, almost on the cantle.
Unfortunately, just because a saddle is excellent quality, it doesn't mean it will fit - I have a $4600 saddle at home because it no longer fits my filly. (Anyone want to buy my Antares from me?)
Eek! Very true. And I already have a bad habit with sitting too far back on my pockets. Not good. But by biggest concern is that is doesn't cause any pain or soreness to my horse; if there is any sign of that then this saddle is a complete no-go. I'll check with my instructor tomorrow to see if this can hopefully get us by for a few months. The holidays and buying new tack have taken my spending money to be honest!
As said before, it's forward more than it needs to be. Otherwise, I think there's hope for it pending how it looks in your next batch of photos.
I concurr. Its way to far forward. More pics with it replaced. Also it may be that you need to raise it up some in the back. Using a ridser pad (I have used Lollipop pads) to raise the rear of english saddles for a better fit. Of course it will only do so much. I love S. Siegfried saddles, life time (and longer) of wear esp when taken care of.
Ok, set the saddle back and everything improved drastically IMO. I'm 100% sure I'm a total goof and that my horse is a complete saint for putting up with me and my goof-ups... wow
Off her shoulders and now the cantle is more even. And it doesn't show well in the photos, but there is clear sunlight under the saddle. Still able to fit 3 (4 if I squeeze through!) fingers over and around withers.
Hopefully those photos are helpful, and hopefully it fits well!
That channel looks awful narrow, Stubbens are known for that, which is why I would never put one on either of my horses (one requires a 4 finger gullet width, one requires 5).
ETA I keep trying to embed the video in the post, but I can't seem to get it to work
I agree, the channel looks too narrow for my liking
