Thin long straggly mane

My new mare has a long mane, but it is very thin and straggly. I want to pull it to a nice short hunter length, but it is so thin already. It is also not just thin but really fine in texture too. Should I just cut it, but cutting vertically not horizontally. Someone suggested that I just use a razor.

I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

Hm, ive never heard of someone using a razor, but it sounds like it would work. Why dont you just roach it? Maybe it will grow back thicker...

If you do end up roaching, please take part in my experiment at:

I used to work on a polo farm and have come to really dislike roached manes. The razor is inside the teeth of a comb and you comb it just where you want to cut. It is not a blunt cut so it will lie down fine. Some people call them humane pullers. You can thin with them if need be but don't have to.
