Joint supplements?????? please give help
ok, i show my 14 year old (he'll be 15 in febuary), quarter horse gelding (very good bloodlines, Impressive) western. He used show contesting for like five years. Ive gotten many compliments on how good he looks at his age. He is on farmam brand of feed, the platform pleasure for mildy worked horses. Do you think i should put him on a joint supplement before next showing season?? i need to know cuz i don't want to pay for one if he doesnt need one. Also, his feed is supposed to have it in it and that you only have to buy some if he needs extra. Thanks to anyone who replies!!! If anyone wants a picture (if answering would help), i'll try and to put one up.
It all depends on what his hypp designation is. I know they can't have any potassium not even in a mineral block. They have a good diet link at http://www.bringinglighttohypp.org/ as to what to feed and not feed.
You have to be very careful what you feed an Impressive bred horse.
Only give if hes sore, or his joints are making noise.
What do you mean by an Impressive bred horse? My mare might have Impressive in her, cause her show name is Impression In Time, her Dad is Impress Me Shanon, and she has 3 other relatives that has Impressive in them. Is that something I should worry about?
I give all mine Cortaflex. Meg is 13years old, and does have a slight clicking in her hock, no pain, but since being on this has improved greatly.
Petra and Willow are both 9yrs old, no clicking, no pain, but I give it to them too. I look at it as prevention is far easier than a cure.
Impressive bred Quarter Horses have a genetic disease HYPP the horse needs to be tested to see if they are HH carrying a double copy of the gene
NH carrying a single copy, and NN carying no copy.
The AQHA is just starting to force breeders to inform buyers and get them to stop breeding the Impressive strain.
Please see the web site www.bringinglighttohypp.org for more information or the AQHA site. I was and still am very upset with the AQHA for trying to sweep this under the rug for so long.
Read my story on this forum under horse memorials Fancy's story.
I want to add to anyone with an Impressive bred horse or a paint appy or QH I would have it tested myself. Don't rely on the breeder to tell you the truth unless they have the results on paper for you.
I just wanted to say that 14 isn't that old.
