Need a tid bit of saddle help
I am an exercise rider while at college, which is a great way to get your horse fix btw. But I ride english by nature, and I come into some problems when faced with the hordes of people that ride Western. Currently at the barn I ride at now, they ride solely western. Most of the horses are trained in English, and the owners of the facility are solely Western but offered to pitch in some money (under 100) for me to find an english saddle that I could use on their horses (and the other horses I ride up to 15 a year). Not about to give up an opportunity for a virtually free saddle. Since you may ask, Western and I just don't get along, try as I might, English is more soothing to my body than Western is.
I come here to ask what type of saddle fits a wide variety of horses?
I currently have a wintec that I use on my TWH, but I would like to have a saddle that I can just throw around. Through out the year I work with Stocker breeds like Paints and Quarter horses, and will be working with friesians within the next few weeks.
I understand that a poorly fit saddle does more harm than good, and I am aware of how to check to see if the saddle fits. I just would like to have an english saddle on hand.
What should I be weary of when buying a used saddle for under 100?
Honestly, in my experience, you should be wary of just about everything about a saddle you would find for that price.
In the western world that I live in, I have found it quite reliable to find a good quality saddle for 80$. That is primarily because they don't know the true price or they just want to be rid of it. I got an outstanding Wintec with a few cosmetic flaws for a simple trade of taking some professional pictures.
AMEN. Even a used $100 saddle is most likely going to be terrible quality, put your leg in an awkward position, and could hurt every horse's back that wears it. The difference between a used $100 saddle and $300 saddle is remarkable. I understand not everyone can afford to spend a lot of money but a bad saddle is worse then no saddle at all. If you can I'd save and get something better quality.
I think you can find a used saddle to fit your purposes for around $100, if you shop shop shop.
I've seen more than one Collegiate go for that in my area (people don't know what they have, or simply want to get rid of it in today's economy). The Wintecs too have gone pretty cheap in my area.
Check Craigslist in your area, and the local feed stores (not tack stores... check the feed stores, usually can find less expensive used stuff there).
