Going to meet this Girl!
I'm so excited to have my first horse project as an adult! I grew up with horses and have had a horse shaped hole in my heart since I moved out of my parents house. I'm going to see this girl on wednesday. I've talked extensively with her owner. She's a little more than green broke to ride and has also been driven some. She's been unused for a year since the woman's daughter moved out. She's overweight and hypothyroid at 4! Regardless, she's sooooo beautiful to me and the woman says that she has such a sweet disposition. We'd be taking it slow together both getting back in shape. To be clear, we dont want a fancy horse. Just a farm pony to ride on trails and help plow our garden and possibly be a 4H project for my daughter in a few years. No one even knows her heritage at all...
I really need some feedback about a fitness plan for her. I dont want to over do it, but i want her to get healthy before any more damage is done to her health at such a young age! Thanks for any help!

I do have some more pics she sent me privatly, but i dont want to break any rules- I 'm new here!:D Thanks so much for your help!
Edited: actually you can see another pic of her to the left...
Also, we wll be free leasing her through the winter with the option to buy her in the spring if she is a good fit for our family.
She is cute!
she seems very cute and definitely on the chubby side. has she already ahd the test for the thyroid? ive read a lot that thyroids are very easy to misdiagnosed! i am in the smae boat with my mare she was severly obese from jsut sitting out in the pasture for 4 years but she is a lot better than what she was! you might want to have her tested for IR as well. I believe thats what my mare is but have not had her tested! there are some good feed on the market from what ive been reading to help with IR horses (low carb) as far as work routine just take it easy with my girl (being off amost 5 years) i started back lunging 3-4 times a week walking/trotting for 15-20 mins and gradually built it up. I lunged her for a good 3 weeks to a month gradually building the time up and then started riding her. Good luck!
Thanks! Yes, she's apparently been tested and was positive for hypothyroid. She's on a daily med and only get's about a cup of grain a day to mix it with. I'm not sure what the med is yet. Her pasture time is kept short so she doesn't founder so her primary food source is hay. I would think this must be contributing to her overweight-ness, not being out and exercising as much. I'm thinking about getting a pasture muzzle thing-though I'm not sure how i feel about them-i dont know much about them. I plan on getting a good vet over here and making sure she's on the right track health-wise.
I think i will take your advice, Classical R and do lunging/ground work with her for a few weeks. That way we can get to know each other too. It'll be good that it's almost fallish and the days wont be so hot on my poor fat pony!
Yes with it getting cooler with fall around the corner you will probably be able to work her a bit longer! my mare came to SE GA in June when it was stinking hot out (still is) so even working her late evenings she would still end up drenched from sweat LOL
Yes, thanks. I'll definitely have her checked for IR. I've been reading quite a bit about all this stuff, and would definitely like to figure out the best and most natural and healthy way to get her in shape and feeling fine! I am a little timid about designing her an exercise program for weight loss. Hoping the vet will help there too. Any more ideas on that would be gladly accepted!
One of the worst pics conformation-wise I've seen. I can't critique anything except she has nice fat butt and really cool coloring and mane/tail. Good luck with her!
She's definitely rugged... A good farm pony. I do love her coloring!
Love her coloring! very cute pony
