Just rode my first TWH...
...and I doubt I'll ever ride another breed! :-)
I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to ride a 20yr old TWH gelding, former state champ, for about half an hour this weekend. I'd never seen a gaited horse in the flesh before, much less ridden one. Watching him move was amazing when his owner gave me a demo, then I got into the saddle...
OMG, I swear I was in heaven with the first few steps of his running-walk! The gliding along, pretty head-shake, it just added up to the most incredible riding experience I've ever had! I've been horse shopping for the past few months, considering everything from QH to Arab, drafts to ponies... But now, I've cleared out all of my "wishlists" and started searching only for Walkers.
I can't wait to find "The One" and have a lovely gaited horse of my own!!!
I couldn't agree more :) Before my husband bought Milo for my birthday I did the same thing, learned and watched all I could about every breed I could... Then I met Milo and Little Blackie and it was all over.. had to have em!
Best of luck to you with your search. I hope you find the perfect horse. Walkers are great, especially for those with bad backs/knees. :)
My boyfriend has a walker and I have a spotted saddle horse who isnt walker but does have a nice little running walk and it is wonderful. Just watch out because not all walkers have the nice running walk. We bought Mystery (my boyfriends walker) in January but looked for over a month and there were a bunch of walkers with jolty gaits. I found that the stockier (more of the traditional/plantation built) ones have a nicer gait. Just personal experience
:-) Thanks, Scrambles & Milo! I'm searching near and far to find the perfect one! Well, as perfect as I can afford, that is!
I'm not sure where in MI you are but if you are interested I have a friend who is heavy in to gaited horses and has a few real nice ones for sale.
My ideal would be a mature (6yrs or older) well-broke horse with trail experience and a nice smooth gait. I'm not particular about gender or color, doesn't need to be a show quality horse but I'd prefer registered if possible just in case I ever decide to show later. My price range isn't all that high, unfortunately - trying to stay under $1500 if possible.
I'd love to get in touch with anyone you might know that has horses which might fit my needs!
ill send u come "correct" links lol. but they are definantly out there at your price range. The one I just got(the one in my avitar) is a 8 year old gelding double registered SSHBEA and NSHA. Ill check it out see if i can find some in MICHIGAN  *chuckles to herself*
His name is Lonny and his number is 269-664-4942 I am friends with his grandson and he said they have a few.
Thanks! I am going out of town tonight thru Sunday, so I will try to call Lonny next week! :)
