So proud of my Dakota!

A friend of mine came over just a little while and asked to go riding... We rode my mare Gypsie and my gelding Dakota. Actually, I rode Dakota and my friend rode Gypsie. Gypsie did perfectly the whole ride.

Actually, so did Dakota.

I thought I was going to have to walk him at night for about a week before attempting to ride him at night... but apparently not! We left at around 6 o’clock and just got back at 8:30... so yeah, the darkness did creep up on us. We walked, trotted, cantered, and hand-galloped... Dakota did perfectly, even when it was dark, and Gypsie was just an angel... albeit a hyper angel.

The horses had a lot of fun. Dakota acted as though riding at night was more invigorating than riding during the day... He was mindful, and not a handful by any means, but he was excited and eager, though he did just what I asked of him. He did spook once, but it was as we were passing a ditch with standing water in it... the water was reflecting the moonlight and as we passed I guess the reflections startled him... but he just jumped and skittered sideways and then was back to normal.

I’m just so proud of him!

Thats cool, just remember, when it gets dark outside, horses have better vision than people do.

Yeah... I love the feeling of being 'forced' to trust my horses when we canter at night... it's amazing when you virtually have to give your life to your horse and let them take care of you and not the othre way around.
