anyone have experience or know a lot about EPSM?
My draft cross is displaying symptoms of EPSM (NOT EPM). EPSM is a disease which affects the muscles.
she has these symptoms:
she only displays these symptoms when exercising and from what I've read, they are symptoms of EPSM. Let me also make it clear that the vet/chiro have said that her saddle fits fine. She does this with EVERY rider, not just me.
She has not had a confirmed diagnosis from the vet (who has yet to come out to see her, will sometime in the next week or so), so this is my best guess to explain her behavior.
does anyone have a horse with EPSM or have experience with the disease?
Have a look here. A lot of GOOD information from people who have been going through it themselves.
thanks wild_spot. I will definitely keep that in mind!
So, I had a talk with the vet about Uma the other day. He said that by my description of what she is doing and how she is acting, and by his earlier observations, he thinks she could have EPSM. He wants us to start her on the diet and see how she does. If she doesn't get any better, he will do a muscle biopsy but if it is controlled with diet he would rather just do that than have the expense of the biopsy.
It's not FOR SURE that she has it, but it's a possibility.
Right now, her walk, trot, and left lead canter are perfect. Her right lead is hard for her to pick up and impossible to maintain. I've had her on the longe line with and without side reins, with and without a rider, and off the longe with me on her. It's all the same result- her right lead is impossible. She has always had this problem, but it has never been this bad. We are going to try to scrounge up some money for a chiropractic for her as well. She has a bump on her croup that was not there before and the vet said that a chiro appointment would probably help
any more info would be greatly appreciated. I'm panicking at this point...
Don't panic! It can be managed :]
When my boy was sore from tying up, a chiro guy I got used sore-no-more liniment above his kidneys and it really helped to disperse the soreness. He also used laser therapy to help disperse the bad gasses.
