A Heart of Gold
The day my mom told me we were going to go look at a horse, was probably the best day of my life. I was so excited! I already had two mini horses but obviously i couldn't ride them. I had shown at the local fair under "horseless horse" that last year so i was not a beginner rider.
We got to the house and there was a pretty little bay mare tied to the trailer all ready for me to try. I got on her and rode her around, she was amazing and I fell in love with her. Later that night my parents got off the phone and told me that i was getting the horse. Her name was Lady.
Lady arrived a few days later, in the icky fall weather. She went from being a calm horse to a spirited Arab that was hard to handle. We even had a trainer come out and he struggled with her. She'd side step when you mounted and had a tendency to bolt.. oh and she was 25. Over the next few years I worked with her all the time. I could ride her in an arena and she was amazing. She got the name Ladybug and it stuck as a name.
The bond that grew over the years was amazing, not only did I have a great horse I had a best friend. The horse that was crazy went to being a calm gentle friend. I trusted her with my life and stopped wearing a helmet as I ride western. Fall 2012 her and i were riding around the pasture when she decided to canter around a barrel that was out there (she was an ex barrel horse) at her age i was nervous about doing that. She fell sideways and i went under with her, face first into the ground. Thank God we both walked away from that unharmed and managed to do a 3 hour trail ride later that week.
Her and I had our ups and downs, she'd throw an attitude all the time. I blame that on her Arab side ;) but she could be that gentle quarter horse. I trained her to be a lesson horse last summer for my little sister. Ladybug loved it, it gave her something to do and she loved testing my little sister, not too much but to the point it'd make her a better rider.
Those evening trail rides last fall or riding her from the back of the pasture to the barn. Those memories will stay with me forever.
On sunday 1/19/14 I went out to practice some tricks with my QH Ace so i spent some time with Ladybug. A kiss on the nose and a treat with one of those big bear hugs. Little did i know that was the last time i would see her. Monday morning i went out to do chores and i saw her laying there, sudden fear crept through my body and i knew. I knew my baby girl was gone. I lost a best friend that day and not even Ace could replace her.
Give your horse a hug and a kiss and tell them you love them because you never know what day will be their last.

Made me cry. ): You really do never know when they'll pass...I certainly didn't know the day mine went.

Sorry for your loss. She sounded like an incredible friend.

So sorry for your loss. How wonderful that in her later years you two found each other.

While we never stop missing them, the ache eases a bit with time and it becomes easier to remember all the wonderful moments without heartbreak.

Oh, goodness the tears. I'm sorry for your loss, but glad that you have been blessed with such an amazing friend. Cherish her always.
