HELP max sliced his back legs open
Well today I went out at 7am to feed the horses and it looked like Max was limping when he came down the hill. His back legs were mangled I was like ****, panicked and ran back into the house. The vets don't open till 8am. so 15mins from now so as soon as it's 8 we will be calling them.. meanwhile is there anything I can do for him?
here are some pics:
omg how in the world did he do that?
get some betadine solution and warm water and a soft cloth or sponge and atleast clean them a bit until the vet can see him....
Hose those down with a mild stream of cold water. You can do this 2-3 times a day, to aid in keeping the swelling down.
It probably looks worse than it actually is, because of the swelling. I'm not sure if your vet came out yet, but I hope he left these wounds 'open' (no stitches), because the swelling is going to rip them right out.
As far as what to put on it, you can use Betadine, Nitrofurizone, or any other good wound ointment. Mainly you want to ensure that the flies can't eat at his wounds, so lightly cover\wrap them with non stick gauze pads, and vet wrap.
You may want to do a 7 day series of Penicillin injections as well. The biggest thing that you may encounter is proud flesh, and there are products that can aid in preventing that; Aloe Heal is one good one.
Thank you both for the help.. the vet can't get out here till 12:30 but he is trying to contact another vet that can get out here within the hour. I tried to clean it with a saline solution but he kept trying to kick me and he had his leg right up to his belly and was trying to hop away :( i feel so bad that my baby got hurt.. I have no idea how he did it D: I already checked all the fences and went through the paddock looking for metal/wire and found nothing..
My guess is they aren't as bad as they lok. My horse did this to one of his back legs, and I nearly had a heart attack! It healed up no worries though.
I would clean it by hosing with cool water, will also help with the swelling. Then honey, honey, honey!!! Smother it in honey, then poultice and vet-wrap.
honey???wat does that do???
Get a vet.
Don't worry about it Crimson, It's the first thing I would have said if it wasn't me. Ok so I tried to hose Max's legs off but as soon as the water touched his leg it was right up in the air and he almost fell over he was in so much pain so.. I'm going to wait for the vet to come so he can give him pain meds and hopefully tell us what else we can do..
I second getting a vet.
Honey is an awesome natural healer. My own vet uses it a lot. It cleans, keeps it moist, encourages healing.
One of my dad's bosses racehorses took a huge round pumo of skin off it's cannon bone, and my dad's boss is too cheap to get a vet. It was already ***** and begginning to develop proudflesh when we found it. We scraped off the puss, honeyed and bandaged, and swapped and re-honeyed and bandaged every few days, and it healed no worries, and no proud flesh.
