spacing for polls on the ground
I have noticed people space their polls different ... I wanted to know how you space ground polls (for canter and trot)?
I just know my horses striding well, so I just space them out either 2 strides apart, or 1 stride apart, depending what I am doing.
So for trotting i would do 2 big steps between each poll and for cantering i do 4 ... what do you set yours at?
For just trotting, about 1 stride apart, and for a more extended trot, about 1 and a half strides apart. For cantering about 2 strides apart.
I like them fairly close, because it makes the horse realize where there feet are.
maybe i am not being clear .. haha
you walk to space the polls right? how how do you "walk" off the spacing :)
Maybe I am not being clear.. haha Are you talking about ground poles, or cross rails?
ground polls :) no jumping ...
It really depends on your horse's stride and what you want the poles to achieve.
For your horse(s) to start (I see you have a TB and a Paint) I would start by placing the poles one bigish step apart (almost as far as you can possibly step)and then play with them and find out what is right for your horses' normal stride. As your horses' get used to the poles you can start to adjust putting them too wide or too narrow to lengthen and shorten the stride.
For the canter, usually if you put the poles 2x as wide as you do for the trot it is good. Make sure your horses are used to 2-4 trot poles and single canter poles before you start even 2 canter poles in a row.
thanks anabel... like i said i already use ground polls but I want to know how others walk them off ... and you answered how you do it so that is what I am looking for.
I know Maddy can do them when i do 2 big steps between each poll for trotting and cantering 4 steps ...
Depends on the horse and the exercise. I take 3 foot steps. So for a series of trot rails I generally space them out about 4 feet, which is one step and drop the rail a little in front. For a series of canter rails I space them out 9 feet apart so that's 3 steps.
