What size jacket? Help
I am having a hard time finding a good size chart for hunt coats.
What do you think my APPROX size would be if my measurements are:
Bust (widest part) = 29"
Waist = 23"
Hip = 30"
Shoulder width = 15"
Spine = 45"
Armpit to wrist= 21"
Sooo.. What the hell am I??? Most of the size charts don't even have jackets that small.. but a kids coat would be way too short.
Is there a size for mee?
I wanna buy a second hand coat online but it's impossible to figure out my size.
And what's a "sweep" ?
Hmmm, when I bought my coat I got it on a good sale from Dover. I went to their online chat and told them my measurements and the coat I was interested in and they told me the best size for me and it fits perfectly. Unfortunately the size you wear varies by the brand of jacket. It's like breeches, you might wear a 28 in one brand and then have to get a 24 in another. My guess is you would be close to a size 2. My bust is 32-34 and I wear a size 4. Some brands don't make those sizes too. Good luck. Shopping for show clothes can be a challenge.
Hunt coats are really hard to size without trying on... different brands fit very very differently! And what looks good on one person doesn't necessarily look good on another. Is there a tack shop around that you could try a bunch on? I'm 5"2ish, generally wear a size 4 or small in most clothes and a 34 in show shirts. My jacket is a size 12 and I've found I'm a 12 (or a 4) in most coats. I'm not particularly long armed or waisted or anything so I'm a regular, not long or short.. Anyways. My coat is an Ariat 12. Ariats tend to be a bit boxier then others (i have big shoulders). Grand Prix I think tend to be very small in the waist and then flair out at the hips. I have no waist and no hips so they look terrible on me but fantastic on others. Elites are more slim cut then ariats but not as curvy as the Grand Prix. Tailored sportsmens fit alot like Elites. RJ classics have several different models. Most of their more 'affordable' jackets are a little roomier and get more tailored the more expensive they are. I actually work with a tack shop from time to time, mainly helping people find properly fitting show clothes so making sure people get the right show clothes is a "passion" of mine :-).What you want is your shoulder seam to hit right at the edge of your shoulder, for your waist to be fittied, and the bottom of your coat hem to hit a touch above mid-butt. Sleeves should allow for a tiny bit of shirt cuff to peek out when your arms are in riding position. It should be fitted, but not so much that you can't release without popping a button! I hope that helps a bit. you may want to just order a bunch of coats and return what doesn't fit.
Thanks that info really helps.
Sounds like Ariat will probably be the wrong shape for me.
Maybe I'll look at some Elites and Tailored Sportsman then.
Maybe Grand Prix seeing as my hips are a good 7 inches bigger than my waist. lol.
I just don't wanna pay an arm and a leg though. heh. :S
Yeah, I totally hear ya on that! I'm a huge fan of ebay. That's where I got my $400 Ariat coat for $100, new. I usually tell people to go to the store and try stuff on to figure out what you want? then look it up on ebay. :)
I have an RJ Classics coat that is normally around $300 and I got it for $100. I really like it. I'm also a fan of eBay.
If it helps, a Brit size 8 is generally convertible to an American 2 and it goes from there (4/10), (6/12), etc.
A lady who sells used a new show clothes gave us a demo on sizing. Here's the short version. She had a size 8 coat,size 20 coat,and a size 16 coat. They all fit her.
I just bought my first hunt coat a few months ago. Definitely talk to a real person before ordering to see how large they run. I got mine through Dover. Even though I'm a size 8, my coat ended up being a 14! The woman told me they run small and she wasn't kidding.
