Saddle Hunting... Corrientes?
So, I have read lots of reviews that say only good things about corrientes saddles- which I love to hear. However the cheap price does concern me especially in today's economy where everyone is cutting corners. Its hard to imagine a Corriente saddle made 10 years ago, verses a recently made model be same quality but I just wanted to ask for opinions for anyone who has bought a saddle from them recently and what they thought about them.
Now I KNOW i get what I pay for but I simply cannot afford a 3000 custom saddle built to fit just one horse. I need something that can be used on different horses and still fit ok with help of a good pad. All I do is trail ride but my saddle I used was ill fitted, and caused my horses to be sore so I got rid of it and am looking for new saddle. I kept coming across the Corriente brand that seemed to be consistent with positive reviews but those seem to be from a few years ago and am wondering if perhaps there has been any changes that affected the quality or if they are still a highly recommended low budget saddle?
Here is the saddle I am currently interested-
They are very good saddles for the money, they are inexpensive because they are made in Mexico, they did change manufactures in Mexico a few years ago, but I have not heard that the new ones are not as good.
They only have one size tree, a Full QH 7" Gullet, but if you have a Horse with a wide build like a Cutting Horse or stocky built Horse you will be fine.
Several members on here own a few of them and they love them, they hold up well.
There are 3 Corrientes in my family. One that my brother bought about 10-12 years ago and used for daily work on a ranch and in a feedlot (putting more wear and tear on a saddle in a month than most folks could manage in a decade). I have one that I bought about 3 years ago and have ridden countless horses a few thousand miles in. I bought it for breaking colts because I needed something tough and cheap enough to not break my heart if it got torn up. So far, it's been fallen on, stepped on, rolled with, and has roped a lot of 1000+ pound cattle without soring a single horse.
My Dad just recently got his last fall after finding that his old saddle had a broken tree. I can't tell the difference in quality between the 3 of them. They are all on good quality trees and, while they may not be $3K show quality, they are certainly good enough for what I need...which is a tough saddle that's comfortable for me and my horses to cover a lot of miles and handle a lot of cattle. I've noticed where they scrimp on their money isn't with the tree or the leather, it's with the things like the conchos, which really are pretty cheap little things but conchos mean basically nothing on a working saddle LOL.
I don't have any decent pix of my brother's saddle without him in it, but here's a picture anyway LOL
He's on the bay horse
Here's mine, forgive the overweight horse, he's been on good feed without much work since fall.
And here's Dad's, fresh out of the box.
And, just for grins and giggles, 2 good horses wearing 2 good saddles after a long day working cattle
And the saddles both old and new look great considering the wear and tear you must put them through. My main concern for quality was the tree and leather, the most important aspects in any saddle over the silver in my opinion. I also want durability- I may not do a lot of hard work in the saddle like you do but I dont want to buy something that will fall apart on me while out on a long ride or if im working with a young horse. And I totally agree with you on the fact that I dont want to pay thousand of dollars and then have something happen to it that doesnt fall under warranty. Just cant afford it at this point in time.
What is their return policy do you know? I couldnt find it on their site.
I know they have a 5 year warranty on the tree but beyond that I'm not really sure. Everyone I've ever talked to there has been really friendly and helpful though. You might just call and ask.
