We had a pretty serious fall, *!graphic pics!*

Anyway, so what happened was that we were trotting atop a hill and I started to slow my girl down to walk down the hill... next thing I knew, we were falling. I'm not sure how we did it, but he went from the top of the hill to the bottom of the hill and slid to a stop on a gravel driveway.

I stayed in the saddle until we hit the ground, then I came out and my girl got up before I did. I was shocked. After checking my girl over, I walked her back to my uncles, where my cousins were, so that they could help me hold her while I checked her over very carefully.

She scraped her skin of her shoulder/chest above her leg and there was a big tag of skin hanging. She'd also scraped her neck a few times and had a few scrapes over her eye. She'd managed to knock her knee and it's swollen, and she chipped a tooth very slightly and cut her lip a little, and the girth cut her when she fell, thouh it's not bad at all.

I am slightly stiff and sore and hit my knee on the way down, so it's swollen up, and I've got 'rock-burn' from the gravel on my shoulder and arm near my elbow. Otherwise, I'm fine. I didn't hit my head or anything (thank goodness).

Anyway, back at my uncles, my cousins held my girl while I washed the worst cut out with anti-bacterial soap and applied peroxide to try and 'foam' some of the rocks and gravel out of her injury. It was filled with rocks and gravel. didn't work very well, but it worked ok.

One of my cousins and I walked my girl home through the pasture. She was definately hurting, not wanting to move much at all... We got her home and my grandma told me to call the vet, so I did. While he was on his way out, my cousin and I kept wet papertowels and an ice pack on her wounds.

So, the vet got out after a bit. He gave my girl a tetanus shot and then gave her something to numb the area that he had to work on before cutting the 'skin tag' off. It must have hurt a bit, even with the numbing agent, as my girl tried to get away from him a little and didn't want him to come near her, but he got it done and then cut a piece of her skin out underneath the wound so that it could drain properly.

The vet looked at my girls other cuts and scrapes and said that she'd be fine. He told me to watch her leg, since she bruised it and it was slighty swollen, but he said that he wasn't worried much about it. He gave me some Fura-Septin and told me to put it on once a day and wash my girls leg out twice a day. He also said that for the next few days, I should keep her close by, like in the yard, since it's fenced in. So I'm going to do that, already got it okayed with my grandma.

Right now, my girl is outside in the fenced in portion of the yard with my gelding, grazing. I'm keeping an eye on her and am checking on her every hour. I'll hose her leg out around 5:30. It's still draining, so there's still a good bit of blood. The vet said that it would drain for the next day or so.

I also asked him about my geldings choking... and he said that there was nothing to do for it short of a type of surgery, and that if my boy was fine of soupy feeds, then he would just keep soaking his feed.

Anyway, we're good now. I'm ok, and my girl is doing pretty good. She got a penicillan shot by the vet, but he said that he wouldn't give her anymore penicillan shots, so I'm not going to.

OMG, poor girl!!! It is so terrifying how quickly these things can happen. I hope she heals up quickly and with no complications. Poor girl will always carry the scar though. {:(

O my gosh!!! poor girl and you. I hope she heals quickly. what a scarry fall.

AussieDaisyGirl 09-04-2009 09:32 PM

Poor girl! That looks awful! I hope she (and you) recover quickly!

My cousin and I just went out and checked on her. It's still draining a lot, and it's pretty swollen, but it doesn't seem to be bothering her. She's walking around and still grazing like there's no problem. Her neck s pretty swollen too, though.

Glad that she will be okay!

Seems like you have some pretty rough terrain around there, is that the second major fall this year?

Britt 09-04-2009 10:36 PM

No... This was the first 'major' fall of this year. Our last (and first) fall was last February...

NorthernMama 09-04-2009 10:52 PM

Wow. Looks bad, but still it seems to be only a surface wound -- really just seems to be that all the skin (ALL the skin) is gone. Must have been some kind of a fall you guys had. Hope you both are recovering OK now.

Have you figured out what happened yet?

Britt 09-04-2009 11:04 PM

Well, I'm sore... but I bet that my mare is feeling a hundred times worse than I am. We're gonna both feel like we've been run over by an 18-wheeler tomorrow, though... She's already getting stiff... I went out just a minute ago to check on her again and had to get her to walk to the porch where the floodlight was on... she didn't want to walk at all.

My shoulder is stiffening up, and my knee and leg is hurting every now and then, but nothing else.

I'm still unsure about how we fell. I'm calling it a 'freak accident' because we ride down the hill we fell at all the time. We trotted up the hill, and I started to slow her back to a walk before we hit the downhill slope and the next thing I knew, we were falling and then it was just like 'kaboom' we were at the bottom of the hill, both on the ground and sliding against the gravel. It was wild... I'm going back over there tomorrow and look at the hill to see if maybe she stepped on a rock and it slid her hooves out from under her or what...

Awwww...I'm sorry you two fell. You girl looks like she got beat up pretty bad. There is no telling what made her fall...with horses you never know. Don't beat yourself up over it though...it was just a freak accident. I am just glad that you both are going to be ok.
