Do you guys leave them on 24/7? Or only when being lead/groomed/tacked up?

CiscoKidd 09-12-2009 06:21 PM

only when being lead/groomed/tacked up :)

I never leave a halter on a horse in the field - in fact I never leave a horse unattended if its wearing a halter, there are just too many things that can go wrong.

I wouldn't normally but there are rare occasions when I will. eg; until I can teach a horse to be caught.

I've always only had a halter on a horse when I was using the halter (ie to lead, tie, etc).

I have never and will never leave a halter on my horse 24/7. Sometimes they can get themselves caught in them and seriously if not fatally injured.

I would rather have a horse that refuses to be caught than an injured horse that refuses to be caught

Horse at our barn have their halters (break away) on in the pasture and when being groomed, led, ect. But they have them off in the stall

horses around here only wear halters when being led/groomed etc

Aero has a permanent scar on her face that was caused by a too small halter being left on 24/7 for I don't know how long (it was on her when we saw her for the first time - as soon as I signed the check to purchase her I took it off and requested it never be put on her again .....she stayed where we purchased her for about two months while we got our property ready to bring her home). Just another reason I am not a fan of leaving them on. Even too small, if it had only been used for leading/etc it wouldn't have caused such a horrible wound on her poor face.

I don't have a halter on my horses unless I'm doing something with them.
