Too wide, too narrow or just generally too small
Hi guys. I'm in need of some advice. I am not sure whether this saddle fits my horses. I am looking for better saddles (stock type saddles) for them. But in the meantime...
Sorry forgot the side view.
That saddle is definitely too wide for either of those Horses.
Thank you, SouthernTrails. I thought so, but I'm trying to educate myself on saddle fit and don't have a lot of knowledge yet. The horses are under condition, do I dare hope that if they pick up a bit of weight, the saddle will be a better fit?
And if you don't mind, would a saddle like the one on this mare be a good choice for these horses?
Yes, both Horse need some weigh and muscle tone, the Horse with the white mane might be able to use the English Saddle one day. Nor sure about the other Horse.
The last Saddle is too narrow, but again a lot of weight and muscle tone is needed, but this would make the last Saddle fit worse.
I can only Guess, the English is a Wide and the last Saddle is a Narrow or Medium
Maybe a medium-wide for the Horse with White mane, nothing would work for the other Horse at this moment that I can think of.
When fitting a Saddle you want the Bar of the Tree in the Saddle to have the same angle to match your Horse, so the Top of the Bar and Bottom of the Bar make the same amount of contact (pressure) form top to bottom.
On a Western Style Saddle you can feel the Bar under the Fleece, the Bar is about 3.5" Tall and runs the lenth of the saddle from from to back, as the majority of the weigh is on the Front of the Bar, fitting the wither area is the MOST important.....
Google horsesaddleshop.com. It's a big website but you will find templates in there. There are instructions in their use. Print them off. Cut each as instructed then pin to cardboard and cut out. 1/2 of the template is for the horse, the other half is for the saddle. Horses with prominent withers need a cutback pommel on an English saddle. With western you'll want a saddle with what's called a barrel front. This style allows more room for the withers. I had an English saddle like the top one. It fit a broad mutton-withered horse that weighed over 1200 lbs.
Saddlebag, thanks will do. The black maned horse in the pic with the trail ranger saddle I'm not even trying to fit right now. Too many issues. I'm trying to fit the pinto (white maned) horse and the chestnut in the first pic.
Er.... I beg to differ.
If we're talking about tree width, from the top set of pcs that 'English' saddle looks sort-of right. The problem is it's not English, it's made in India or Pakistan by the look of it, and the shape is really awful.
The problem with your horses is they fall in behind the shoulder and the panel on the Indian saddle is nowhere near supportive enough to carry the correct tree width. It's even possible the saddle arch is collapsing, a very common problem with that type of saddle, which will allow the tree to widen even more if you sit on it. It'd be worth checking by trying to force the tree points together or apart and feel for movement while you listen for any nasty grating noises.
I'm sorry to tell you this, and don't wish to appear rude, but personally I'd never put one of those things near my horses' backs. Throw it away and look for a branded used saddle and a decent saddle fitter - you'll struggle to get the horses comfortable without the latter.
Best of luck :)
Unclearthur, don't worry I'm past the point of taking offense. the saddles are no name brands, well no sorry one of then is branded but it's not a well known brand. The saddles were bought by my grandpa eight years ago from someone who probably told him it was good quality. Neither of us knew better back then. I will check the tree, one of them did seem to be slightly coming apart at the pommel. I don't think they're truly broken, but worn out might be a very realistic possibility.
the biggest problem is my budget. In RSA for the money I've got I can probably afford one good saddle, new or second hand. and I've got two horses to kit out. \
A quick question to saddlebag, what is a barrel fronted saddle? Sorry, tried googling it, but all I get is barrel racing saddles.
