training for eventing?
I have a new horse, and i want to start eventing. He is newer to jumping, but I want to train him for eventing. He is good at dressage, but not really at jumping. Any ideas for getting him started? my trainer (does not to eventing) jumped him on the long line, and he jumped up to 4'6 with no issues. Semi just seemed to step over it! Jump ideas, or exercises I could do with him?
You say the horse has no jumping experience, but do not mention how much you have. The answer depends on your own experience level with training horses to jump.
Eventing involves a lot of split second problem solving on the part of the horse, so anything that makes him think about where his feet are while still building up his confidence would be good. While you need to be an active, effective rider in eventing, ultimately you need a horse who can think for himself. Micromanaging never seems to turn out well.
Assuming you have experience training a horse to jump, start with things that will make him feel like a superstar, things he can do in his sleep. The goal is forward and straight. W/T/C him over poles. When he's bored with that, do the same things over small cross rails, then low vertical, etc. Lots of gymnastics with preset striding to get him using himself well. Design everything to build on the last thing you did with him, so he is always working from a standpoint of something he is already familiar with. If he ever seems frustrated or overfaced, go back to the previous exercise. There's a book called 101 Jumping Exercises. It's good for people who don't have a lot of access to lessons.
If you don't have a lot of jumping experience, forget all that above stuff and please work with a trainer. Too much can go wrong with jumping to do it alone with little experience.
I have been riding for 11+ years. And jumping maybe 5? Thank you!! He does flat really nice! He learns so fast!

I've got other ones, but am supposed to be working now, so more later.
Thank you is much! I can't ride because I hurt my back but I will do those as soon as I can ride again.
