How many kg of feed?
Shad has lost a bit of weight lately, which isnt too bad because a few months ago he was quite fat. Up close he looks fine but from a bit of a distance he's looking a bit thin. I weighed his feed yesterday and he gets around 8 kg, and there isnt much grass in the paddock. He was getting ridden about twice a week, quite a decent workout but lately i havnt been doing much with him. He's starting to get pretty fit, has quite a bit of muscle down beside his tail and a bit over his neck, not much topline over his back though. Im not that worried, i wouldnt want him to drop much more weight so i'll keep an eye on him.
But i was just wondering how many kg of feed a horse should be eating each day? Say for example 16hh and out of work?
General rule of thumb is to provide 1% to 2% of body weight in hay/roughage. Follow the directions on your grain.
Mine get 10 to 15 lbs (4.5 to 6.8 kgs) of alfalfa a day along with some pasture. The grain comes out to 7 to 10 lbs (3.2 to 4.5 kgs) a day.
I like at least 8% fat in my grain. I look for dehulled soybean meal, flax seed, rice bran, beet pulp, soybean oil and probiotics in my grain.

Make sure there is enough protein! Horses that doesn't get enough protein will eventually loose topline and muscle. (Like here it's quite common that horses starts loosing weight and muscle in spring due to lack of protein in the winter). :)
8kg is not really much.
Crow (15hh and not too heavy) gets about 9kg hay per night, but he's out in the pasture all day. He'd get more but won't eat it, so I have to feed about 2kg of barley to keep his weight too. At winter he eats 10-12kg hay plus hay and straw in the pasture, and the grain.
Our draft gets 7-8kg hay but free access to staw. He's incredibly obese (was when we got him) but is slowy loosing weight.
The icelandic gets 8-10kg hay when he's in, plus a few kg lucerne and barley. He was neglected and skinny tho so I wo't give him lucernce any more now when he has a good weight.
Thanks for the replies!
I'd say he needs alot more hay then, hopefully the grass will get growing soon lol
