Is there any way to approximate a horse's height without sticking them?
I don't have access to an actual measuring stick but I'd like to approximate Lacey's height so when people ask I'm not all "well...I think she might be 14 something...", yknow?
She does wear a size 68 blanket (somewhere I read that horses that wear that size are generally 13.2-14hh but that just might be foals) and I know she's most definitely a large pony/barely a horse but I'm leaning towards large pony size.
Measure from the middle of the knee down to the coronary band - however many inches is how many hands. Usually within an inch, give or take, accuracy.
14" would be around 14 hands (13.3 to 14.1)
You can also lay something on the withers and measure down to the ground. Divide that figure in inches by 4 and that will give you the hands.
Yep, you can get a regular tape measure (so long as she is comfortable with the noise) and stick her with that. Just divide the total inches by 4 and you have her height. i/e: 54 inches would be 13.2, etc.
