Odd swellings in fascia/subq tissues
Help! Even the vet doesn't know what it is! My 12 year old QH gelding has some strange horizontal swellings in the fascia/subq tissue over his shoulders. On bad days, it moves over his girth area and rump as well. They are not hot, but he does become sensitive. After trying herbal skin tx, as well as a good omega3-6 blend to mild effect, the vet thought it was time for the big guns - dex to no effect, antihistamines to no effect. I am maintaining him now with cool water baths to soothe, hoping for a miracle. I purchased him in january of this year, but have known him for 5 years. He is a sensitive guy, but his skin is usually only itchy at this time of year, which we treat with bathing, etc. I can send pictures if anyone thinks they can help.
Thanks! I can't wait to see your suggestions.
Can you post a picture?
For sure, I'll get a good resolution shot tonight and post it asap. Thanks
Here are some pictures of a 'good day'
I'm not sure what it is but the first thing that popped into my mind was... does your horse have stall mats in his stall? It looks like the pattern on the stall mat, like your horse was laying down and it left that impression mark?
Your horse Poco by chance?
I think 7Ponies is on to something. These markings are far too geometrical not to be linked to something man-made. Lying on something; leaning on something; walking in between something and he gets too close on one side and gets scratched by it. Try to find that pattern at ground level or exactly that height.
Thanks for the suggestions. It is definately not an impression mark. It's really difficult to describe. It is on both sides and does not massage out. Definately inflammation from the inside, but from what, we don't know. The stall mats have X s on them, not wide lines and they are bedded in fairly deep shavings. Nothing else around that height. My new question is...does anyone think it could be something in the water? We're on a well....
Qtrhrsecrazy - no, but we do have a Poco Bueno in the barn!!
Have you tried just straight MSM? Sometimes that can help with random allergies and swellings. It's worth a try, I doubt it could hurt him.
Also, did you change fly spray, laundry detergent for his pads, shampoo, etc? Go back and see if anything he comes into contact with was changed or washed with something new.
I had a horse that was allergic to a certain laundry detergent and it took forever to figure out that was it. Keep thinking and investigating. You could also try blood work to see if anything abnormal pops up...
Other than that I don't know what else to have you try. Good luck!
Thanks! I did go back with blankets, detergents, shampoos, fly sprays, etc. Nothing there. It's super frustrating. Thanks for the MSM idea. We are all at a loss!
