dealing with injuries
Does anyone ride with old injuries?
When I was younger, I always wanted to jump on horseback. In grade 8, I ended up banging up my knees badly and was told not to play sports for a week ( I did anyways). Since the last 2-3 years, I have horrible sharp pains in my knees and was told I have the knees of a 80 y/o woman. I have arthritis.
So I can't jump long enough anymore without feeling pains in my knees. Dressage is now something I like doing. =]
I'm just like you!
I used to do gymnastics as a child and I started to have bad pain in my knees too. the dr. said to stop the gymnastics cus my knees had a type of "sport's injury" that would progressively get worse if I continued the sport. I have bad knees. my knee joints move around where they aren't supposed to and they crackle if you feel them when they move. I think the years of P.E. in school made it worse. :( I'm only 22, and I think (FEEL) like I have the joints of an old woman and I fear I am going to have an early onset of arthritis in them. Surprisingly they don't ache with just horseback riding, but other activities like running and vigorous excersize exacerbate the pain and worsening of my joints. (And I have to take another P.E. class as a requirement for my associates degree, sighh, figures.) Oh, and I started taking joint juice too, who knows if it'll truly help in the long run, but right now I am willing to at least try it.
PS- The creams like icy/hot help ease the ache for a bit (kinda like liniment for horses except for humans :P) and I think they have knee braces you can wear for support when you ride.
I either ride with the old injuries or I don't ride at all. Right now I'm nursing a dislocated finger (and surgery to repair the tendon) that I got from my sons nice gentle horse. I have also broken my elbow and had to have surgery to fix the arthritus that got to bothering me two years later. As people get older mostcollect a series of injuries that let you know you've led an active life. If I had gotten to be thirty years old and had never gotten hurt I would know I had not lived life to the fullest.
I have old compression fractures in my back...fun fun, especially if the horse decides to really give ya a ride!
I also have fibromyalgia, which can complicate things on occasion; but I still ride every day I can! I might just be nursing muscles later!
Oh wow... where to begin?
From the head down, I guess...
- Still dealing with the effects of being kicked in the head almost 2 years ago now.
- I had/have stress fractures in my upper thoracic vertebrae
- I have a thoracic ribhead that is constantly out
- Lower back has always been a problem with me
- I've always had problems with my knees, but just 4 months ago I was kicked in the knee by my horse, and I'm still dealing with the damage.
Dealing with old and new injuries myself. My knees are shot. They want to do a total knee replacement, but I don't wanna.
I came off my Paint in May and have been dealing with pain and swelling since. I just had a bone scan done on Tuesday and there is soft tissue injuries and a possible fracture in my foot. I can't get into the ortho doc until 10/22 so until then I'll take Advil and deal with it.
Luckily I have a high pain tolerance. I walked on a shattered knee for 2 years when I injured it when I was 12.
Eek you lot are falling apart!!
Mine are only minor injuries, they don't stop me from doing anything in riding, I'm just a bit achey afterwards.
I ripped all the ligaments in my groin about 5 years ago getting thrown into a gate then the horse fell on me when my foot with still in the stirrup.... that wasn't very pretty :S
Then have dislocated my shoulder a few times so after I ride it aches for a while but after a few hours I'm back to normal in the upper body, just hobble a bit for the rest of the day thanks to my groin.
A simple groin pull is bad enough I can imagine how much that hurt.
After falling off more times than I can count, and so much back pain that I couldn't stand for more than 15 minutes, couldn't bend over for more than about a minute, physically was incapable of sitting up straight while sitting normally, and couldn't sleep on anything harder than an air mattress, I finally learned that I'd totally screwed over my back. My pelvis was rotated forward (causing my hip bones to protrude from my front, which is odd), as well as being shifted to the right, my tailbone is misaligned, some vertebra in my mid-back are out (that stick out grossly), and a vertebra in my neck is out. Just before I started going to a chiropractor to get it all fixed, I was walking with a cane. But now I feel so much better. :)
I still have injuries, but most of them aren't too bad.
