So... Much... Brain... Hurt...
English bridles; possibly the most confusing tack since driving rigs. I mean, they all look exactly the same, yet are marketed for different purposes! Or maybe I'm just thick headed...
Anyway, I'm on the market for a new bridle and I have no clue what I should even be looking for. So, what makes a good bridle? What should I be looking for? It wouldn't be for anything special; just for hacking around and such.
Thank you all so much!
You just need a plain bridle for hacking around. No figure 8 noseband, no crank caveson and no flash needed. Just look for the simple english bridle that is constructed of quality leather.
The most important thing to remember when looking for any bridle is make sure it fits properly. You could have the most perfect bridle but if it doesnt fit well then its not going to do any good at all. For hacking just a normal snaffle bit bridle will do but thats all depending on your horse too. What kind of horse do you have?
Also if you go to your local saddlery they will be able to help you out alot too
What makes a good bridle is ( as everyone else has said ) one that fits your horse. Also look for good quality - it will cost more but will last much longer and be much stronger.
If you are only hacking around then a plain hunt cavesson will do , you need to be looking at about USD $120 for a good quailty bridle ( this should include plain reins ). I have seen many cheaper bridles with broken reins / cheekpieces, buckles that are breaking or weak and leather that will not last. Your life depends on your bridle not breaking - I know several people who have seen horrific accidents because of bridle breakages.
I agree. Make sure it fits correctly and is in good condition. I would say that if you have some money to spend get a completly new one. Dont go for a used one or anything like that. Make sure the leather is of good quality and that there isnt any cracks or any defects.
What kind of horse do you have?
