What is the white stuff on cross country horse's legs?

So I've been LOVING watching cross-country on YouTube lately! Today, I was watching the great Quimbo (isn't he gorgeous???) and his rider, Andrew Nicholson, on their 2013 Rolex cross-country course. I noticed some white stuff slathered on his legs and I've seen it on other horses, too. What is this white "stuff?" What does it do? Is it good or bad? Is it only used for cross-country? Thanks!!

I'm assuming what you are talking about is sweat :-)

It is grease to help protect legs and slither over some fences.

Is it special horse grease? Obviously its not car grease haha ^_*

Haha, originally, yes! But then I noticed that Quimbo started out with the thick, white stuff on his legs:D

I think it most like cooking grease, like crisco.

Its grease to help them slide over the fences :)

Yep, slippery stuff-could be Crisco or Vaseline.

That's interesting! I always thought it was just sweat/saliva, and never really thought about ithttp://www.smiley-lol.com/smiley/exp...ensif/idee.gif I wonder how hard it is to get off.

Me too! I thought it was a mix of sweat and saliva that lathered up, but I noticed it on Quimbo in the starting box before he began! And oh my goodness, yes. It must be impossible to get off!
