First ride! Whoot!

Well I had lots of time to play with Flicka this weekend, and today I decided she was ready for a short ride. She did really well, was calm and relaxed the whole time. I'm really proud of her, and how far she's come! Her last owners said they couldn't even get their foot in the stirrup and she would flip out; the worst she did was raise her head and tense up a bit when I started putting a bit of weight on the stirrup (starting with just hand weight, then moving to my foot, then leaning over her, and finally getting on).

I almost always ride with polo wraps, or my SMB's (fronts)...that's just me. Are they necessary? Maybe not, but what can it hurt...and if it prevents extra strain...why not? I also do a lot of trail riding, and sometimes the areas aren't cleared very well, so they also can prevent sticks, and other objects from cutting or jabbing their legs. Like I said...just me.

And every horse I start, or retrain is usually trained with the halter, as to me, it's not the bit that controls a horse. Doesn't seem 'game' or brave to me, but I've always done it that way, so I guess to others it might seem that way!

Thanks. I rode her for the second time this morning...bareback! I don't think she's ever been ridden bareback before, because she just kept turning her head looking at my feet like, Huh? She did really good though...I rode her around the campus, and then got off and let her graze some more. Then went and brushed her out, and gave her the rest of her breakfast; pellets and hay. :D She was super comfy bareback too, so I am definitely excited for when she gains more confidence.
