How long did it take you to get where you are in eventing?
I have been riding for around 8 years, but super inconsistently due to owning an OTTB who was waaay too much for me. I've been out of the saddle for about 7 months since I sold him, but I'm trying to find a new barn because I would really like to start eventing lessons. I'm going to be honest I don't really know anything about the levels or anything like that. I have done some dressage and jumpers (up to 2'6), but what I really want to do is the XC. Of course I have played around on my old barn's makeshift XC course, but how long & how much experience did you have before you actually went showing in it? I'm probably intermediate level rider or a little below as I am a bit timid because of my last horse. The reason I ask how long it will take is because I am a sophomore in high school and I was really wanting to do some eventing before I graduate and I'm feeling like I don't have much time left. So, how many lessons did you take per week/month, did you have your own horse, and where is your riding now? Thanks! :D
and I guess my other question, do you have to have a minimum skill level or is there pretty low level events?
when i started taking lessons at an eventing barn i was doing cross rails in hunters and jumping NO higher. I took 2 lessons a week for about 2 months, and then she had me ready to do a tadpole 3-phase. I think it all depends on your instructor, your horse, and your drive, because i'm also a sophomore and i'm so motivated that im learning extremely fast. But the horse i took lessons on was a VERY seasoned eventer,so that helped. Now i have an OTTB that me and my instructor are training for eventing, he knows flat and jumping already, but im prepared for it to take a while to move up the levels with him.
At the eventing schooling shows, the lowest level i've seen is pre-ameoba, which is 12". Then amoeba 18", tadpole 2', etc. At horse trials, they start at beginner-novice 2'6"
I hoped this helped!
Only 4 months ago! And with 4 months under my belt she's got me jumping 2'6" regularly, and to think I only jumped cross rails ( like crap ) before so it shouldn't take long at all for anyone else.
