Tack Cleaning Help
Ok. I have A HDR English saddle, and a leather girth and bridle. When I clean I do this.
1) Clean off with damp cloth and gycerine saddle soap.
2) Oil with Leather Therapy, multiple layers until saddle doesn't soak up as much or any more.
3) Use bar of "saddle Soap" (It's a yellow bar. I use damp cloth. ) To seal it.
That is, give or take, the "pony club way" My mom does it, and I hate it. My tack is always sticky. I don't like sticky. I wouldn't mind a little stick, but this is more than a little sticky. And it gets much dirtier much quicker. I think the dirt sticks. I've tried excluding the Leather Therapy. The glycirine. Just using the Saddle soap. It doesnt make any difference.
So what could I try/am I doing wrong? I would prefer if there was something that I could change without buying new tack cleaning stuff- We have alot of this stuff, and my mom wouldn't see why we should bother getting new stuff when we have all this stuff.
i guess i'm bad !!! i can't remeber when i last cleaned my stuben, i use it every second day for lunging ( i can't ride for a few more months) but when i do clean my tack it's just with saddle soap and a rag, i only oil my tack about 2 to 3 a year
These folks say its due to the ph balance:
I pretty much clean mine like Kansas; saddle soap and a wet rag. Every once in a while I'll use a conditioning lotion on it (I think I'm using a big jug of Lexol right now...). Rarer still, I will oil it, maybe twice a year.
It sounds like a wax build up. you may have to do some heavy duty buffing ie elbow grease. I have never used the leather therapy does it have wax in it? I too only oil my saddle twice a year with pure neatsfoot. could it be high humidity? We rode in an area last week with extreme humidity and my cinch leathers were so sticky I could hardly tack up, I was desperate for baby powder.
Note to Kansas twister: I'm still not using saddle soap
