Mare In Heat?

Ok, I feel really stupid asking this, but I just recently bought a mare, and she is leaking yellowish/clear fluid. I think it may be because she is in heat, but I've been riding for 9 years, and the other mares I've dealt with have gone into heat in a more obvious way (like when they almost do that half squat before leakage?) and her's just... leaks without any tell-tale sign or warning. If she wasn't my horse I'd probably just wave it off as a mare showing her heat cycle differently than what I'm used to, but since she's MY mare... I guess I'm just a worried mom.

Anyway, if anyone can just tell me whether this sounds normal or if it sounds like there may be something wrong, I'd really appreciate it. It's been going on for a week, and it's dirtying her butt... and I don't want to call the vet unless something actually is wrong, and this sounds too trivial... Thanks in advance.

It is much more likely your mare has an infection. I'd be calling that vet and having her flushed.

I have seen other mares in heat have the same thing you are describing. I wouldn't worry unless she shows signs that she isn't feeling right.

I've only had her for 7 weeks, so I don't know exactly what "right" is for her. Between getting used to the new barn, to getting used to new people, etc... I guess I'll just give it more time and if it doesn't go away I'll call the vet? How long does a heat cycle like this usually last?

Yeah. I wouldn't worry about it to much. I would say give it two weeks and see whats going on then

Ok, thanks for the input! I'll also ask my trainer about it, I'm seeing her on Friday.

Not normally that much, nor for that long.

Cycle average 3 weeks (18-23 days). In season 3-7 days.
