Ive got a horse that suffers really badly with sweet itch. I have never really known anything about it and just wash his mane and tail every week. However this is giving him very bad, sore skin. I brough some cream and this is helping a little. Anyway he rubs his tail until its raw, he has sores on his bum bigger than a tennis ball!! I apply wound powder to them, but that gives him big bits of hard skin falling off. This is really affecting my showing and really need some advice.
Hi, I understand it is an auto-immune reaction to an insect bite
Take a read of this as it says it all. Sweet itch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'd be inclined to rug to stop the insects getting to the infection site as a first measure.
Thank you just tried the benzl benoate and it worked really well. He is much more comfortable.
