Question about colts.
Can someone tell me when is the average age that colts "drop"?
And when is a good time to geld?
We like to geld the spring they are turning a year - before bug season.
My freind said anywhere from a couple days to up to a year in extreme cases. I think once they have dropped, it is safe to geld anytime.
My freind said she preffered six months, but someone on here said theirs was already gelded at 4 months old. My little guy's have dropped, and he is around six months old, so we are going to geld him soon.
Mine is 18 months old and haven't dropped yet. I guess he is a late "bloomer".
Yea, I have a 6 month old, and he hasn't dropped yet.
Most horses should have their testicles descended at birth or by a couple of months of age. The inguinal ring begins to contract by six months, increasing the chance that you will be dealing with cryptorchidism. Occasionally stallions do not drop until 1-2 years but this is uncommon and if your horse has not dropped by 1 year he should be examined for cryptorchid (retained testicle).
If he is a crypt, you'll need to deal with it surgically. This can cause tumors that occasionally metastasize or can lead to colic. To read more about it check out this article: The Horse | Stallion or Gelding? and no, I'm not partial, just because my mentor is interviewed in it! ) =p
I prefer to geld at exactly at a year old but no sooner than 11 months and no later than 14 months. That is just me though. Others have pretty much answered the question on dropping. But yah, I just like to let a colt grow a bit before castrating. We did my (now) gelding when he was 13 months old and he was never ever stud like or anything.
I had my boy gelded at about four months old. He's already dropped and my vet said that if I'd had wanted, he could gelded him the day he was born. According to my vets reccomendations, the best time to geld is in the fall.
I was also wandering that myself because of Caddo. He is 5 months old and I haven't noticed if he has dropped yet. I was told that most vets want geld a horse before 2 years old. I am wanting to go on and get Caddo gelded as soon as possible. I also like gelding in the fall when the bugs are not as bad.
I've never heard of a vet not gelding utnil they're 2! I know many who've been gelded before they were even weaned, but I think a yearling is more of the "norm"
