Help for White Line Disease

Hello everyone!

I haven't been on in months, so I apologize for my lack of participation around here! I have a question regarding White Line Disease. My horses had their feet trimmed a few weeks ago and the farrier said Tanner (my TB) has White Line Disease in his front right hoof. He cut a groove in the bottom of the hoof near the outer wall and told me to put bleach on it everyday for a week. I have put bleach on it, but how do I know that it took care of the problem? When I looked at the hoof, it looked fine to me, so obviously it hasn't advanced much, which is good. Is bleach the way to go or should I use something else?

FYI, they are in a muddy pasture because we have gotten a LOT of rain, so I'm thinking it could have come from the moist ground. I clean their feet and they don't look thrushy, so otherwise, they are healthy. Any advice is appreciated. :)

i dont like to put bleach on anything, let alone living horsey hoof tissue. Talk to the vet. there are probably better alternatives.

what ive always used was some stuff called Hoof Freeze, it works amazingly well, when i got my younger gelding he had horrible white line disease and i used that stuff on his foot almost everyday and it was gone within a couple weeks!

Razz had white line. We gave him a month off, and put thrush-buster on his hoof daily. He's still tender, but coming along well.

Yeah, I don't like the idea of putting bleach on it either. I was worried that it might hurt him, which is probably dumb, but whatever. I'd rather buy something that I know will work instead of something I won't even touch with bare hands. It freaks me out. :(

I would not use bleach, especially not full strength. The best thing is to soak in Apple Cider Vinegar and water. This helps restore the ph balance to the hoof. You can also put the ACV /Water into a spray bottle and spritz the area daily.

I agree with AppyT and keep the trims up to date.

You'll find much discussion on WLD on this forum if you use the search feature. There is an ongoing chicken vs. egg debate about what comes first -- the WLD or the poor hoof condition.

Way back in the day I had a mare who had white line and my farrier told me to soak in Epsom salt. It worked!
