Couldn't Stay Away
So last week I set up my first riding lesson in about three years. There are so many reasons why I stopped riding, most of them related to time, money, and self-confidence. But I couldn't stay away any longer. So I found a barn that seemed low pressure (they encouraged everyone from young children with special needs to adults who've never sat on a horse before) and asked for a lesson.
I just got home and I can't stop smiling. I rode an adorable Arabian/Saddlebred cross (I know it sounds weird but he was great). He looked more like a Quarter Horse with a pretty head than anything else though. He was pretty disinterested in me and tried to refuse to go into any corners in the arena, but it was still great just to be on a horse again. I remembered so much more about riding/tacking up than I thought I would.
I gained a lot of weight after I stopped riding, so when I was walking into the barn I half expected the instructor to look at me and say, "you expect to learn to jump on MY horses? No way fatty!" But luckily nothing mortifying happened. We pretty much just trotted the entire lesson. I've lost the balance I used to have, so two-point was a disaster. I can still post well, I just can't do ten other things while I'm posting the way I used to. No cantering today which was probably for the best considering my newly discovered balance issues.
Still, I'm happy. And I'm going back this Tuesday.
That is wonderful ! Way to go....I have been riding more lately myself and am a returning rider after having about 7 yrs off . Nice to meet ya : )
Welcome to the forum! Horses have a way of reeling us back in don't they? :D
Thanks you guys! Now that I'm starting up again, I can't believe I waited this long. I still have to meet the other instructor who will be my regular one, but I'm hoping she'll be as nice as the woman I met today. And hopefully I can start jumping in a month or two. My balance just isn't good enough to do it right now, but I'm hoping all the old skills will come back to me.
