Large Sized Western Bridles?
Hello! I have a large quarter horse/paint/thoroughbred gelding, and I'm having a very hard time finding a fitting western bridle. He wears either large or warmblood halters, as he cannot fit into the average sized ones.
On his average sized headstall, the throatlatch won't latch, and the browband pinches his forhead. I've tried making longer browband and throatlatches to help him be more comfortable, but they don't work very well.
I've tried searching online for larger sized western bridles, but I cannot find any. Does anyone know where I might find one? Do they even make them in that size? Or should I buy an english bridle? I just want my boy to be comfortable! :)
Find a saddle maker and ask him/her to build you one.
What about a draft bridle? I bet they make those western... Maybe they would be too big?
Punch extra holes in the throatlatch
I don't think I have a saddle maker in my area--just a tractor supply store. I've tried looking for custom headstalls online, but couldn't find anything. Are there people out there who make them?
I think a draft bridle would be too large for him--my gelding is about 1300 pounds. Not quite an average horse, and not quite a draft. I guess not enough people ride warmblood sized horses western. :?
I've tried punching holes in his bridle to help it fit. His throatlatch just barely stretches to latch with the hole punched right at the end of it--it is way too tight to be comfortable for him. I've tried using a buckle dog collar as an extention of the throatlatch, but that was really akward (and it didn't solve the tight browband problem much).
Right now I've converted a old one-eared headstall with a twine and rope browband and throatlatch into something that sort of works for him. I'd really like to get something more perminant (and more durable!) though.
Here's one that says it's large:

I don't know if that's what you're looking for but it's cheap! =)

Where do you live? I will find out if there is anyone that would do a headstall and ship it to you.
If you are interested I can make you a bridle to fit your horse
As of today the prices start at $130 ( $/£ is going the wrong way ) , this will include shipping to the US
Look at the link on the bottom of my post - this will take you to a photobucket account where you can see some of my work
