Surgery for cribbers!
At a talk I was at tonight there was a guest equine surgeon. He discussed a laser surgery that removes some muscle and severs some nerves that effectively cures cribbing! The muscle removed apparently doesn't affect any performance at all -- they have done this on dressage horses that go on to perform. The nerves severed prevent the release of the endorphins that give the horse the "high" from cribbing. It's about $2500 at his hospital including all care, hospital stay, the surgery itself, meds. etc. etc.
Thought some of you might be interested. I had never heard of this before.
I've heard of it, and I personally think its a little ridiculous. I have a cribber, and although the habit is VERY annoying, I think there are less severe ways of managing the habit. I would compare it to cutting off a toe to be able to wear a certain kind of high heel.....just get a different pair of shoes!
I have never heard of that. I really don't think I would sign on for something like that. I mean, why risk it? Surgery is risky, and the long term results might not be satisfactory. Thanks for sharing though! I'm always game to hear new ideas in the horse world:)
I guess it's a matter of severity and preference. The surgeon said that some people would rather not do the surgery and try to manage the cribbing at the barn with collars, different fencing, and whatever they can come up with. For others it just drives them crazy so they opt for the surgery. Some barns won't allow cribbers and it can end up being a health issue as well.
They do this now with a laser so it is not as risky as before, but yes, there always are risk with surgery for sure.
I wouldn't do the surgery, but I just wouldn't spend that amount of money on any of my horses. We don't perform or compete. Just backyard pet rescues.
