Shoe Clip in hoof - recovery time?
What recovery time period am I looking at for a horse that pulled a shoe and got the clip up into his hoof? I do not know that exact location that the clip penetrated his hoof, it was a horse that I was supposed to be picking up last week until this happened.
I've had horses at work step on clips, but most of them seemed completely fine once I removed the shoe. So how much damage can the clip actually do??
Depending on how close it is to the farrier due date, the location of where the clip has penetrated and what shape the horse's hoof is in the horse can either be completely fine or on the other end of the spectrum the pooled blood from bruising can cause a severe abscess.
My advice would be to soak the foot in warm salt water or saline every day and keep it as clean as possible to prevent any infection.
He had just been shod the week before. The owner had been soaking his hoof and poulticing it. I guess he is still a bit sore on it a week later, but is being turned out. The shoe has not been put back on yet.
This was a horse that I was going to purchase, so he is not in my care and I have not seen the hoof.
Have they had a vet or farrier look at the horse and maybe the soreness issues are not related to the clip at all?
Yes both farrier and vet have been there. I did not speak to either personally, but the owner said it was just the clip in the hoof causing the soreness. I was just really expecting the horse to be sound after a week and was surprised to hear he wasn't.
It's good that it's getting poulticed too!
I am not surprised at all that the horse is still lame. The horse probably has tender feet (which is why it was shod in the first place) and it got the clip in there when the sole was thinner than usual (it had just been trimmed). So now the horse is sore from not having a shoe on when it's used to it AND it has a big bruise on it's foot that could abscess.
Give it a while. Good luck!
